In this article, we aim to provide a brief analysis of the concept of via negativa through which the renowned Polish artist and director Jerzy Grotowski articulates both his artistic view and the philosophy underlying his entire training of his acting method. This negatively formulated notion also serves as a practical research direction conducted in his theatrical laboratory. Our analysis begins with the religious implications of the term, extracts some consequences of the Grotowskian artistic vocabulary, and ends with some general observations regarding the essential features of the Polish theatre school and tradition.
