Space as Attention and Vice Versa. Case study: Introducing Eastern Literatures to the Uninitiated
The study focuses on several aspects of the mechanisms of media coverage of Eastern literatures (The phrase subjectively encompasses the aesthetic, thematic, and stylistic area common to literatures that have undergone the method of socialist realism) after the de jure fall of the Iron Curtain. Intending to integrate itself with the values imposed by the Western Canon (a set of rules that are exquisitely restrictive for authentic literature and unnaturally permissive for the rest of it), the “visible” part of Eastern literatures, in just three decades, leaves the System of Signs proper to Literature and adopts a thematic and stylistic perspective that seems to guarantee universality. A context persists in becoming tradition, not to say posterity, simultaneously with the abolition of traditions. This process of changing essentially different paradigms uses any means to divert all possible attention of readers towards the economic criterion, and eventually to hold it hostage.
Following the trans- and interdisciplinary course of officially mediated literature, subject to ideological and image changes (as a means of selling), it can be observed that this ‘type of writing’ / ‘textuality’ unnaturally tends to absorb all the attention (as a mental and vital space) meant to ""feed"" and perpetuate authentic literature. Although it seems just a more substantial and different format version of the daily press, the mainstream textuality remains, unfortunately, an abuse at least threefold: of the devoted reader's time, of the community's non-literary tastes, and of the art of writing as a field.
