Naguib Mahfouz as a Playwright: Stages, Societies and Imaginaries
This editorial introduces the thematic issue of „Études Théâtrales” (“Theatrical Research”) devoted to Naguib Mahfouz as a playwright, a dimension of his work that remains less widely explored than his fiction. Bringing together nine studies, the issue examines Mahfouz’s theatre from complementary perspectives: its relationship to the Arab world, its engagement with society, power and the sacred, its reflection on the human condition, and its metatheatrical, corporeal and visual dimensions. The contributions reveal a dramatic oeuvre marked by symbolic density, philosophical inquiry and formal experimentation, while highlighting its relevance for contemporary theatre and performance studies.
