Abstract

Music and Musical Theatre in Communist Romania: Between Ideological Control, Cultural Liberalisation, and Propaganda
This study investigates the profound influence of the political context on Romanian music and musical theatre during the communist period (1945-1989), structured into three distinct stages. The first (1945-1965) was characterized by ideological purges, the marginalization of significant composers, and the Sovietization of cultural institutions, with an emphasis on reworked folklore subordinated to propaganda. The second (1965-1971) coincided with a short-lived liberalization under Nicolae Ceaușescu, marked by cultural openness, diversification of the local musical scene, and the rise of new artistic voices. However, the “July Theses” of 1971 reimposed strict ideological control, consolidated during the „Golden Age“, when censorship and the cult of personality drastically constrained creativity. The “Cântarea României” Festival epitomized the propagandistic instrumentalization of culture, enforcing uniformity while erasing artistic diversity. Despite restrictions, certain creators preserved aesthetic autonomy through symbolic strategies, reflecting the persistent dialectic between political coercion and artistic resistance, and underscoring the role of cultural memory in shaping post-communist identity. Within this framework, Cenaclul Flacăra (1973-1985) functioned as a major but ambivalent cultural phenomenon. While it provided a platform for emerging artists and fostered mass cultural participation, it was equally criticized for its ideological alignment and authoritarian leadership. Retrospectively, its legacy remains complex, demanding nuanced analysis beyond simplistic condemnation or idealization.
