Naguib Mahfouz: Toward a Theatrical Allegory of the Arab World
Naguib Mahfouz: for a theatrical allegory of the Arab world. In his theatrical works, Naguib Mahfouz moves beyond the alleyways of Cairo to engage with a broader stage: that of the collective crises and aspirations of the Arab world. Written in the wake of the 1967 Arab defeat, his dramatic oeuvre emerges from a historical rupture and interrogates, with remarkable austerity, the erosion of shared ideals. Through symbolic figures, archetypal settings - desert, house, apartment building, mountain and cave - and condensed dialogues, Mahfouz explores the fragility of meaning and the persistent desire for justice and dignity. This minimalist theatre transcends Egypt’s borders to articulate a message of human solidarity and broader significance. Far from being a mere extension of his novelistic work, it constitutes a space in which memory, dignity and collective consciousness are placed under critical scrutiny.
