Expressivity as a Form of Knowledge: Performative and Decolonial Methodologies
This article reflects on the methodological and epistemological foundations of a doctoral research project that investigates how ethnicity shapes the actor’s expressivity, focusing on Romani and Jewish performers. The study employs a qualitative and reflexive approach, combining semi-structured interviews, performative analysis of theatrical works, and autoethnographic positioning. Rather than proposing a fixed theoretical model, the research foregrounds the challenges of conducting inquiry from within an artistic and minoritarian identity. By adopting a decolonial lens, the study interrogates dominant aesthetic norms and emphasizes the ethical responsibility of engaging with historically marginalized voices. The paradox of expressivity – the tension between emotional intensity and its aesthetic containment – provides a conceptual framework, not as a definitive theory but as a guiding principle for analysis. The article discusses embodied knowledge, the politics of voice and memory, and the responsibilities of researching vulnerable subjects. It also reflects on the negotiation between artistic and academic standards, between positionality and analytical distance, and between personal involvement and scholarly rigor. In conclusion, the research demonstrates that the expressivity of minoritarian actors functions as an epistemic practice: a form of embodied knowledge, situated at the intersection of affect, memory, visibility, and art’s critical function.
