The Identity of the Person and the Character between Role and Social Fatality – Facing the Contemporary Spectator
The study focuses on the representation in prose, theatre, and the media of an unusual phenomenon from the Albanian Alps, as well as from Kosovo, Montenegro, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to the official version, established over the past quarter century, when a family no longer gave birth to boys or when all male members had died – most often as a result of cycles of blood feuds (gjakmarrja, blood- taking) – one of the daughters would swear to live the rest of her life as a man. In Albanian, such women are called burrnesha. The lives of these women changed irrevocably, including at the level of language and social perception, as well as in the way they themselves perceived the world and their own existence.
