Nudity in Contemporary Theatre: Between Artistic Expression, the Gaze, and Pressure
This article examines the use of nudity in theatre, focusing on the boundary between artistic expression and gratuitous exposure. Starting from a brief historical overview of the representation of the body on stage, the study explores the changing meanings attributed to nudity, from ritual and sacred functions to its role as an instrument of confrontation in contemporary theatre. Particular attention is paid to the relationship between the exposed body, the director’s vision, and the spectator’s gaze, as well as to the gender imbalance that frequently shapes the representation of female and male bodies. Drawing on aesthetic theory, performance analysis, and personal observations, the article questions whether stage nudity functions as an expression of vulnerability and artistic autonomy or as a form of visual consumption and professional pressure. It also addresses consent, the negotiation of personal boundaries during rehearsals, and the ethical responsibilities of theatre-makers. The article argues that nudity cannot be evaluated independently of its dramatic context, artistic function, and conditions of production. Its relevance therefore depends not on the degree of bodily exposure, but on the meaning it creates and on the respect afforded to the performer.
