Rezumat

Sacred, Power and Resistance in Naguib Mahfouz’s Theatre
This article examines the representation of the sacred, power and resistance in Naguib Mahfouz’s theatre through two major plays, “Il fait mourir, il fait vivre” and “Le diable fait la morale”. It shows that Mahfouz develops a “theatre of unveiling and spiritual resistance” grounded in a critique of the political and ideological instrumentalization of religion. Through symbolic reversals in the titles, a metaphysical dramaturgy of time and space, and allegorical characters, the playwright opposes an authoritarian faith based on fear to a poetic faith founded on love, freedom and individual responsibility. Language becomes a site of confrontation between domination and resistance, while stage signs visually articulate the conflict between light and darkness. Mahfouz ultimately proposes a humanist vision of the sacred in which the search for truth, freedom of conscience and hope form the basis of an authentic spiritual experience.
