Abstract

Culture, Dissemination, Public Service

Experience shows that public service media show slight aversion towards programs the presentation of which should normally be their duty: for example, towards presenting cultural events. Among these, presenting classical music concerts faces significant resistance.
There are, certainly, exceptions to the rule, like the New Year’s Concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, broadcast by the Austrian Radio and Television (ORF). Eurovision has embraced this event, too, and its channels broadcast it practically all over the world.
The paper attempts to answer the question of how a classical symphonic concert becomes a media event that exceeds in rating football world championships.
