Quest for Truth in Drama: From Secret to Confession in Moliere's “L’avare” and “Tartuffe”
Under all its forms of expression, drama tends to render at best the human condition. From writing to the dramatic staging, it looks like a mirror that reflects the imperfections of the society. The slippages of all kinds, often held in secret, can be exorcised. The play becomes a place of confession for the playwright who reveals in it his secrets. Thus, in this ongoing quest for truth, the play vehicle codes on the author and the society. These codes have for key receptors the society itself, the people, the reader-spectator or the spectator. Molière highlights the French society of the seventeenth century under a comic feather in “L’Avare” and “Tartuffe”. In these texts and on the stages, he mocks the social asperities for a catharsis.
