RESCUR: SURFING THE WAVES – From Malta to Hidegvölgy. The Hungarian-language adaptation of the international RESCUR resilience curriculum in Romania – Experiences from its implementation in a Roma-ethnicity classroom
This study explores the adaptation and pilot implementation of the RESCUR – “Surfing the Waves” international resilience curriculum in a Hungarian-language classroom in Romania, focusing on socio-economically disadvantaged Roma students. The implementation took place in six classrooms with a significant presence of Roma students. The study provides a brief overview of the general experiences and presents in detail the results from one segregated urban classroom. Roma students encountered challenges related to limited vocabulary, oral learning traditions. Mindfulness, storytelling, drama, and multisensory activities were adapted to the student’s developmental needs, while parental engagement required classroom-supported alternatives. In the highlighted classroom, activities such as storytelling, puppetry, and silent activities were already familiar to the children and therefore did not pose difficulties. However, the use of printed materials and the completion of home assignments proved unfeasible due to the low reading comprehension skills of both children and parents, as well as their limited engagement with school-related tasks. The study highlights the importance of cultural and linguistic adaptation, simplified activities, and active collaboration within teachers and families.
