Synopsis

Transmissions. Studies on Applied Music and the Borderlands of the Performing Arts

Boros Csaba’s Transmissions stands as a singular scholarly endeavor exploring the intersections between applied music and the performing arts. Drawing upon over fifteen years of compositional and theatrical experience, the author investigates the aesthetic, dramaturgical, and cultural layers of meaning inherent in stage music. The volume adopts an interdisciplinary approach, weaving together theoretical frameworks from theatre studies, musicology, and cultural theory to construct a nuanced hermeneutic model.
Structured in three thematic parts, the book opens with a series of interviews featuring prominent composers of the Hungarian Transylvanian generation – including Orbán György, Csíky Boldizsár, Selmeczi György, and Demény Attila – offering insight into the complex dialectics between directorial intent and sonic articulation. The second section delves into the acoustic dramaturgies of Harag György’s productions, illustrating how music functions not merely as accompaniment but as an integral poetic force within mise-en-scène. The final, more theoretical essays examine applied music as a performative phenomenon and bearer of collective memory, proposing its status as an autonomous work of art.
The central concept of transmission serves as both metaphor and methodological lens, highlighting the fertile crossings between artistic media. Boros contends that applied music is not a secondary, decorative element, but rather a driving force in the generation of stage meaning. These studies – marked by high analytical precision and compositional authenticity – offer valuable insights into the aesthetic agency of sound within the contemporary performance landscape.
As such, Transmissions provides a much-needed contribution to the scholarly discourse on theatre music, inviting a reevaluation of applied sound as a full-fledged artistic and dramaturgical entity in its own right.
