Metaphor and Irony as Critical Tools in the Performing Arts
We may argue that metaphor is intrinsic to art, because it is intrinsic to the process of translating fragments of reality onto the stage. The role of the critic, among other things, is to unpack the meanings encoded in stage metaphors and to analyse them through critical reflection. This paper will examine whether metaphor is merely a stylistic device that enhances the appeal of critical writing, or whether it also plays a fundamental role in artistic creation and interpretation. Additionally, the research will address the use of an ironic, even sarcastic, tone: under what conditions does this become a critical excess that should be tempered, and when can we speak of irony as a legitimate critical tool?
