Twenty-First-Century Technology and the Reconfiguration of Traditional Theatre
This article examines the relationship between twenty-first-century technology and the transformation of traditional theatre, with particular emphasis on the balance between digital innovation and the live encounter between actor and spectator. Starting from the premise that technology has always been part of theatrical practice – from the mēchanē and ekkyklēma of ancient Greek theatre to contemporary videomapping, digital projections, amplified sound, streaming, and interactive applications – the study traces the historical continuity of technical experimentation in the performing arts. The article combines historical analysis with the author’s practical perspective as an actor, director, and spectator. It investigates the conditions under which digital tools enrich theatrical language, expand the stage space, increase accessibility, and create new forms of interaction, while also considering the risks of excessive technological mediation. Particular attention is paid to the possibility that projections, screens, microphones, multimedia systems, and virtual environments may distract the audience, weaken the actor’s presence, or transform technology into an end in itself. Examples from ancient theatre, Renaissance stage machinery, nineteenth-century visual technologies, twentieth-century scenography, and contemporary multimedia performance demonstrate that technological change does not necessarily undermine theatrical tradition. Instead, it can contribute to its renewal when it is integrated into a coherent artistic vision. The article argues that technology should function as a creative partner rather than as the dominant element of the performance. The essential quality of theatre remains its liveness: the fragile, immediate, and unrepeatable exchange between performers and spectators. Therefore, the future of theatre depends on its ability to incorporate digital innovation without losing the human presence that defines the theatrical event.
