The Pedagogy of Cultural Diversity in Romanian Education
Multicultural education became a significant pedagogical concept in Eastern Europe after the political transformations of the late 1980s and early 1990s. The democratization of the educational system provided space for recognizing and integrating ethnic, cultural, and linguistic diversity into curricula and teaching practices. This study explores the theoretical foundations of multicultural education, focusing on its role as an idea, reform movement, and process. By examining the Romanian context—through legislation, curriculum reforms, and educational projects—it highlights both the opportunities and challenges of fostering tolerance, cultural identity preservation, and social cohesion. The paper argues that teacher training, linguistic diversity, and intercultural competences remain crucial factors in shaping inclusive schools. The conclusion stresses that multicultural education in Eastern Europe is not only an educational but also a political and societal project, aiming to balance cultural diversity with integration.
