Artistic Research: Practice as a Medium of Knowledge
This editorial examines artistic research as a mode of knowledge production in which artistic practice functions not merely as an object or outcome of inquiry, but as an epistemic medium through which research questions are formulated, tested and transformed. Continuing the discussion of the “artistic research ecosystem” developed in the previous issue of Cercetări teatrale, the article addresses the conceptual instability of artistic research and the difficulties involved in distinguishing it from artistic creation, theoretical research on art and institutional procedures of academic validation. It discusses Christopher Frayling’s classification of research into, through and for art and design, as well as the contributions and limitations of the perspectives proposed by Henk Borgdorff, Julian Klein and Robin Nelson. Particular attention is paid to tacit, embodied, procedural and experiential forms of knowledge, to the relationship between artistic practice and critical reflection, and to the criteria of intentionality, originality, documentation, dissemination and public examinability. The concept of exposition is analysed as a means of making artistic research accessible without reducing the artwork to an illustration of an external theoretical discourse, while also acknowledging the risks of mediation, retrospective coherence and institutional standardisation. In relation to theatre and the performing arts, the editorial emphasises the temporal, bodily, collective and relational character of knowledge, as well as the instability of the theatrical event and the distributed nature of authorship. It also considers the institutional recognition of artistic research, the relevance of the Florence Principles and the Vienna Declaration, and the need for a coherent national framework in Romania. The articles included in the present issue are briefly introduced as examples of the methodological and thematic diversity of contemporary theatre research.
