The Extremes Within Us – The Role of Tolerance in New Media Spaces
Social discourse includes the opinions of individuals, smaller groups, and larger communities, which emerge through interactions between people, either verbally or in written form within the public media space. As a result of this dynamic process, opinion formation is influenced by environmental, economic, and political factors, as well as by personal experiences, habits, beliefs, and prejudices. The plurality of differing opinions often generates resentment rather than acceptance. How can tolerance be fostered within a live radio show that discusses various topics from week to week? As the host of the Hungarian-language weekly talk show PárBeszéd (Dialogue) on Radio România Târgu Mureș, I will attempt to analyze, in regard to this subject, my eight years of experience and knowledge, spanning from 2017 to 2025. How can a two-hour talk show convey knowledge and information while also providing entertainment? How can we transmit emotions through radio while simultaneously encouraging critical thinking? What skills should a radio host possess to prevent opinion bubbles from reinforcing distortion or polarization, and instead promote openness and analytical capacity?
