Far Away Yet Close. Kincses Elemér staging “Don Carlos” in 1977 
On December 30, 1977, Schiller’s “Don Carlos” was presented by the Hungarian Department of State Theatre in Târgu-Mureș. Elemér Kincses, a newly graduated young director gave a modern interpretation on the well-known play. He also developed a special relationship with the dramatical text, as he himself declared in the programme-booklet of the performance: „Schiller’s brilliant work is almost or totally incomprehensible at first sight. It is like a gothic cathedral: while I am standing inside it, I can see only the details. To perceive all its beauty, I must move away from it. If I move away, the beauty of the details is lost. So, to be far away and yet close, this is the task”. By the analysis and the reconstruction of the performance, I seek to answer why is considered canon forming this outstanding achievement of Kincses’s directorial career.
