Információk

Symbolon is an academic journal published by the UArtPress Publishing House of the University of Arts Târgu Mureș, both in print (ISSN 1582-327X) and online (ISSN 2344-4460) since 2000. All articles published since 2021 are assigned a DOI under the journal’s prefix 10.46522/S. The journal publishes the same number of articles in print and electronic format, with no differences in content between the two formats. We do not practice the form of online-first publishing. Each issue was published separately.

Symbolon publishes articles in English, Romanian, French, and Hungarian, with all submissions subject to a double-blind peer review process. The journal upholds the highest standards of editorial ethics, academic transparency, and international scholarly communication.

The first three issues were published annually, and since 2003, the magazine has been published biannually. Since 2014, one of the issues contains studies in the media field, the other thematic being on performing arts. Since 2017, we have been publishing special issues on art education and music.

The journal is preserved in the PKP Preservation Network. The authors are allowed to deposit the submitted, accepted and published versions of their paper on any archival site, including the journal’s website.

Aims and Scope

Symbolon is dedicated to advancing scholarly research in the fields of theatre and performance studies, film and media studies, and musicology. The journal promotes interdisciplinary dialogue and cross-cultural analysis by integrating theoretical, historical, ethnographic, and practice-based perspectives.

In addition to its regular issues, Symbolon publishes special thematic issues that delve into specific areas of interest within the arts and humanities. These special issues are curated by guest editors and have covered topics such as art education, music, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the arts. This approach allows the journal to explore emerging trends and provide in-depth analysis on pertinent subjects.

The journal's mission and its thematic profile were formulated by its founders in 2000: "The Symbolon journal has emerged from the desire to reinvigorate theatre studies. It is a multidisciplinary scientific review that encourages the research of theatrical phenomena from the methodological perspective of theatre sciences. Its host studies are related to the history, theory, sociology and semiotics of theatre, as well as to the pedagogy of acting, theatre anthropology, aesthetics, psychology and other scientific fields. "
Since its founding in 2000, Symbolon has maintained a multidisciplinary orientation, rooted in the desire to reinvigorate theatre and nowdays, media and music studies. The tematics, choosed by the scientific board of the University are ment to explore complex cultural and artistic questions from multiple perspectives, enriching both the scope and depth of its scholarly output.

Our journal’s main objectives are:

  • To focus on major subjects in the field of arts, both from a theoretical and practical point of view;
  • to encourage the publication of the most recent results of the art research by Romanian and foreign scholars;
  • to promote interdisciplinary dialogue between arts and other sciences;
  • to stimulate scientific debates;
  • to provide an appropriate environment for the affirmation of young researchers, such as MA students and PhD candidates.

Special Issues Policies

Symbolon publishes Special Issues to highlight focused themes of current academic relevance in the fields of theatre, performance, music, film, and media studies. These issues provide a platform for in-depth exploration of specific topics, enabling the journal to support emerging research areas, interdisciplinary dialogue, and scholarly collaboration across institutions and countries.
All policies that apply to regular issues equally apply to special issues. In addition, special issues follow supplementary procedures to ensure transparency, academic integrity, and editorial oversight.
Special issues are initiated either internally by the editorial board based on strategic topics or through external proposals submitted by qualified guest volume coordinator(s).
External proposals must include:

  • clearly defined theme and rationale;
  • A list of potential contributors;
  • A timeline for submission, review, and publication;
  • Short CVs of the volume coordinator(s), demonstrating academic expertise in the topic area.

The Special Issue is supervised by volume coordinator(s) in close coordination with the editor-in-chief. While volume coordinators oversee the thematic and academic development of the issue, the editor-in-chief retains ultimate responsibility for editorial quality and ethical compliance.
