Abstract

Violent Online Extremism

This paper represents a brief survey of violent online extremism, between myth and reality, as a challenge for liberal democracy, and as „generation Z” (millennials) confronts it. Various researches have demonstrated that „generation Z” does rely to a lesser degree on traditional media, its primary source of information being social media, and its primary means is some mobile device or PC. This fact results in a rootless competition between content providers to acquire consumers’ attention and foreshadows a new paradigm in content distribution, in which content producers lose control over distribution in favor of social media networks. In this context, the under-regulation of online content production in comparison to traditional media, appears highly relevant. At the same time, due to the wave of terror that sweeps through Europe in the current years, there is a high risk of big-brother style surveillance and potential arbitrariness unnoticeably becoming part of our every-day life.
