Abstract
Cultural Resistance at the Târgu Mureş Puppet Theater. Interdiction for "Fables… fables?" Performance
At the end of the 1980’s puppet theaters in Romania were struggling to survive. Smaranda Enache, the artistic director of the Târgu-Mureş Puppet Theatre from that period wrote a play, which can be considered an example of cultural resistance. The play Fabulonia is an allegory of the communist Romania. A country named Fabulonia is led by a donkey-dictator and his wife. In this country everybody tells lies, slavery is practiced, corruption and nepotism blooms, and the growth of the resistance leads to the demolition of the system. The co-authors, despite the repeated harassments did not let themselves convinced to rewrite the piece, and the show was doomed to silence. The opening night was hold in January 1990, when the performance lost its actual message.
